Emile’s Hiking Tips

Never hiked before? No worries. Emile Serrette, Certified and Licensed Tour Operator, gives some handy tips for the newbies.

Exercise

Prepare by doing some cardio workouts — a stepper, treadmill, elliptical or even regular walking.

Start easy

Alright, men, forget your egos! It’s okay to take the easy way out. If you’re a first-timer or out of practice, try Rio Seco or Marianne Waterfalls. (Check Emile’s website www.naturetrektnt.com for more details).

Dress properly

Long trousers to protect skin, caps to protect eyes. No cotton (nylon dries faster), no sleeveless tops, no earrings. No perfume or cologne — this attracts bees (!) Carry a proper backpack (not too heavy!) so your arms can be free. “Water shoes” are not necessary, but sneakers must have good grips underneath. Be warned — Emile is not averse to cancel the hike on the spot if you show up in a pair of rubber slippers!

Bring water (and no macaroni pie!)

Water is a must; energy drinks are good too. Please leave the liquor for when you’re in civilisation! Leave heavy food in the maxi to devour after the hike. Hikers can’t afford to have “-itis” moments in the bush!

Leave tiny tots home

Young children are often quite happy and sturdy on the first leg, but struggle on the way back. So, unless you’re superhuman and plan to carry both them and yourself… you get the idea.

Never hike alone

Even the fittest of the fit can’t do much to help himself/herself if something happens in the wilderness. In fact, it’s always best to go with an expert who is familiar with the terrain. Your life could literally depend on it.
